Making The Offer
"You may not have a second chance to recruit the best candidate".
- Don't offer at the interview
- Don't delay too long - you could be in competition for the candidate
- Make the offer by phone AND mail - this overcomes any postal delay and gives the candidate the impression of being wanted
- Give the candidate time to think it over - up to one week is reasonable
- Confirm arrangements. For example: a medical, start date, induction programme, etc
- Don't lose touch (the candidate may not start for 3 months)
- Arrange a meeting with other staff. Drinks after work? A pre-start lunch?
How Long?
How long does the recruitment process take? Whilst this can vary considerably, you should probably allow a period of 4 months before a senior manager takes up their new appointment and two months for middle management. Can you afford the position to be vacant for this long? In many instances, temporary cover will be appropriate. The interim teams of each Alexander Lloyd division can provide professionals at all levels during periods of recruitment.
In Conclusion
Successful recruitment depends simply upon following a logical process: gathering relevant information via a structured approach in order to make a rational and intelligent decision. The best predictor of future job performance is NOT the candidate's qualifications, nor how pleasant the candidate seems at interview, but past job performance.
